Inside the Dancer’s Studio

Inside the Dancer’s Studio

If you think you need the perfect space to practice, think again!

When I ask people what keeps them from practicing, they often say “I don’t have anywhere to do it”.

What they really mean is “I don’t have the perfect place to do it”.

We think that before we can practice, we need everything to be perfect:

The PERFECT moment.

The PERFECT practice plan.

The PERFECT dance space.

But that’s just not true.

If you wait for perfect, you’ll never get started.

And getting started – just showing up – is the most important step of all.

So practice wherever you can, however you can, as soon as you can.

Imperfect practice is way better than imaginary future practice.

Take a look at my own studio

To give you a little inspiration, I created a behind-the-scenes look at my “perfectly imperfect” home studio.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m lucky to have a dedicated practice space. Boston is an expensive housing market, and an extra bedroom ain’t cheap!

But this modest bedroom is hardly the huge, airy studio we think of as a “real practice space”.

And yet, I’ve done more and better practice here than anywhere else.

And one of the best private lessons I ever had was in the teacher’s dining room.

Because I showed up.

And that has made all the difference.

So have a look

Your turn:

What do you love about your practice space?
(Functional reasons, aesthetic reasons, emotional reasons, whatever!)

What do you wish you could change about your space?

What qualities make a dance space work for you (or not)?

Does your space have a story?

Share your thoughts in the comments.

Do you wish you practiced more?
