Geek Out with Roxxanne Shelaby

“The Early Days of Belly Dance in Los Angeles”

Episode 31 of the Belly Dance Geek Clubhouse:
My guest, Roxxanne Shelaby, will talk about the early belly dance scene in LA.

If you enjoyed our “early days” episodes on the early dance scenes in Boston, New York, and San Francisco, you’ll love this one!

About Roxxanne

Roxxanne Shelaby performs throughout Southern California bringing her unique dance style combining her Lebanese heritage and Egyptian soul.

Roxanne is fortunate to have grown up surrounded by Middle Eastern Arts. Her love of Middle Eastern music and dance flourished as a child, growing up at the family-owned The Fez and Cascades nightclubs.

She began performing at the age of 16 at the request of Farida Fahmy (lead dancer of the national dance troupe of Egypt) to represent The Reda Troupe, and has studied extensively with master teacher and choreographer Sahra as well as with Farida Fahmy, Zahra Zuhair, Vivianne, and Feiruz Aram.

Check out her upcoming documentary on the Fez at:

You’ll learn about:

  • The first generations of dancers in LA – and the musicians they danced with
  • The middle eastern communities that made their homes in LA – and the nightclubs that brought them together
  • What has changed since then, what has stayed the same

We’ll also have some discussion time, so you can ask Roxxanne your questions.
